Canary Islands – The new president of the Canary Islands Special Zone (ZEC), Jimena Delgado-Taramona yesterday Monday, [23 April] took possession of her office in a ceremony chaired by the delegate of the Government in the Canary Islands, Mercedes Roldos. The new head of the Consortium, whose appointment is recorded in the Official State Gazette (BOE) last 7 of April, appreciated the confidence placed in her to assume this new professional responsibility, which she will carry out with “enthusiasm, dedication, humility and responsibility.” During her speech, Delgado-Taramona praised the work of all her predecessors who have made the ZEC as a powerful tool in the framework of the European Union (EU). In addition, she noted that in this new phase she will work to enhance the strategic role of this REF incentive as tool for economic diversification and thus open up to new companies which are a driving force capable of opening business niches and generate highly qualified employment in emerging sectors. The new head of the ZEC highlighted the involvement and sensitivity that the State has always shown with the ZEC with the huge boost from the 2015 reform, which she stressed has become “the star instrument of the REF both to generate jobs and to attract investment to the islands.”
“I take on this challenge fully convinced about the enormous potential of our land to generate wealth and opportunities, given that we must overcome the structural problems of our productive model in order to manage to transform our economy and society. This work requires the involvement of the public and private powers, which is where I want to offer the ZEC since its intrinsic purpose is to contribute to the economic diversification of the Canary Islands, as it can play a role in achieving this common goal,” she noted. In addition, she added that one of its purposes is to position the Canary Islands in a geo-strategic axis of worldwide investments, and a reference in the international tax context, as well as revitalize the institution and encourage the promotion of the Canary Islands ZEC product, to make it internationally known.
The new president of the ZEC explained that, as a regional organization, it will work with “balance and fairness.” “We will work for the economic diversification of each one of the seven Canary Islands,” for the purpose of which it will reach out to all the institutions that work with the purpose of attracting investments to the Canary Islands. “I take over a unique and powerful instrument, that in combination with the rest of the attractions already owned by the Canary Islands, may be able to change the future of our land. An instrument that aims to open up new horizons, new hope and new opportunities for all the people of the Canary Islands. Attracting and retaining talent; give the young professionals of our land an opportunity, a chance for all the Canary Island families which deserve a better present and future,” she highlighted. Finally, she added that she will play her small part to contribute to the growth and well-being of the Canary Islands.
